Case Brief

Isabelle Marchand, a private banker from Geneva, boarded the night express to Vienna with one attaché case and left instructions for a five o'clock call. At dawn, compartment 7 was bolted from the inside; the door had to be forced. Marchand lay strangled with her own scarf — and the case that never left her sight stood open, and empty.

Snow closed the line soon after Innsbruck; no one has left the sleeper car since. Whoever killed her entered a bolted compartment and left it bolted — then went back to bed an arm's reach from the body.

Six people shared the sleeper car. Questioned separately, they offer alibis that fit like carriage couplings: each account is confirmed by another suspect and confirms a third. Testimony that perfect is not luck — someone drew the circle.

The Victim

Isabelle Marchand

Private banker from Geneva

Forty-eight, unmarried, keeper of quiet fortunes for families who prefer not to be named. She was traveling to close an account she called only "overdue" — and she tipped the attendant to note everyone who passed her door.

The Suspects

Viktor Brandt

Industrialist and former client

Marchand froze his accounts pending an audit he calls slander. His compartment adjoins hers — and the connecting door, papered over for years, was found unbolted on his side.

Ilka von Reth

Widowed baroness

Travels with the last family jewels and debts that outgrew them; Marchand's bank holds paper on both. She says a sleeping draught took her before midnight — the steward poured her coffee at one.

Camille Roux

Traveling auditor retained by the victim

The auditor Marchand retained for her quiet accounts, issued the case's second key for the work. A letter ending her engagement was drafted last week; she swears she never saw it — and can't say why she checked the case at Innsbruck.

Dr. Gustav Pichler

Physician returning to Vienna

His sanatorium failed when a Geneva bank pulled its financing — which bank, he won't say. He insists he retired before midnight, yet can name every person who passed along the corridor in the small hours.

Josef Marek

Sleeping-car attendant

Twenty years on this line, deeper in debt than his wages explain. Marchand paid him to log everyone who passed her door; the page for midnight to three is torn from his book.

Jules Ferrand

Wine merchant, by his ticket

His papers are three weeks old; his luggage holds no samples, only cuttings on a scandal Marchand quietly buried years ago. He boarded at Innsbruck and asked at once which compartment was hers.

How hard is this murder mystery case?
Hard: six suspects, a locked compartment, and alibis that lean on one another. Best boarded with a case or two solved first.
How long does this case take to solve?
Plan for 25–40 minutes; the locked compartment and circular alibis reward detectives who re-interrogate before accusing.
Can the suspects in this case actually lie to me?
Yes. Every suspect is played live by AI, each with private motives and a rehearsed story. Even the innocent have reasons to keep that night vague.
